So many of us go through life thinking that healing only happens in the hands of doctors, therapists or the right medication. And while medical care is absolutely vital in many cases (and something I always encourage alongside the work I do), there’s a beautiful truth that often gets overlooked: your body already knows how to heal itself.
That might sound surprising, even impossible – but it’s something I’ve witnessed again and again, both in my own life and in the lives of my clients. Deep down, your body carries an extraordinary innate self-healing mechanism and when we create the right environment, it can do incredible things.
Read on to find out what self-healing really means, why symptoms are not our enemies and how you can begin to reconnect with your body’s natural intelligence.
The Body’s Innate Healing Wisdom
Think about what happens when you break a bone. You head to hospital, they put a cast on and then… you wait. It isn’t the cast that heals you – it’s your body. The cast simply provides a safe environment for your bone to knit back together.
This is the essence of self-healing. Doctors, practitioners and healers (myself included) don’t actually ‘heal’ you – we help create the space and conditions where your body can do what it already knows how to do.
Your body isn’t just a physical ‘meat suit’, you are a mind-body-spirit complex made up of emotions, energy and a physical form, all interacting in one beautifully intricate system.
Healing is about restoring balance to that system.

Symptoms as Signals
One of the biggest mindset shifts on the healing journey is seeing symptoms not as problems to be silenced, but as messages from your body.
Take knee pain for example. Often, we’ll reach straight for painkillers to switch the discomfort off. While medication can be important at times, if we only ever suppress the signal, the body will try to shout louder. A symptom is simply your body’s way of saying: “Something is out of balance – please pay attention.” Ignoring or suppressing those messages for too long can lead to more serious issues over time.
By listening, by getting curious and by asking what’s really going on beneath the surface, we can begin to address the root cause, instead of just managing the noise.
My Own Healing Journey
I know how overwhelming it can feel when your body seems to be working against you. For years I battled digestive problems and chronic fatigue. I had all the tests, but nothing ever showed up. I felt dismissed, lost and increasingly frightened of my own body.
Eventually, I began to wonder: what if the answers weren’t purely physical? What if my emotions, my energy and/or my beliefs were part of the picture?
Tentatively, I started listening to my body instead of ignoring it. When pain arose, I’d gently ask: “What do you need from me? What are you trying to show me?”. Sometimes a memory would surface. Sometimes an intuitive nudge to change my diet or lifestyle. Often, just that simple act of paying attention shifted things.
The real turning point came when I discovered ‘The Emotion Code®’ by Dr Bradley Nelson. The technique helped me release Trapped Emotions™ which are unresolved energies held in the body – the difference was immediate. My pain reduced, my energy lifted and most importantly, I regained trust in my body.
Fast forward a few years, and I went on to qualify as both an Emotion Code and Body Code™ practitioner. Today, I’m healthier in my fifties than I ever was in my twenties, thirties or forties.

Faith, Trust and Partnership
One of the most important aspects of self-healing is cultivating a relationship of trust with your body. For much of my life, I was afraid of mine. Every new symptom felt terrifying and my mind would spiral into worst-case scenarios.
But your body is not your enemy, it’s your ally. It wants to heal, it knows what to do. When you start to believe this, even if you don’t yet know how healing will happen – you create a space for miracles. Faith and hope aren’t just nice ideas; they are powerful forces that support your body’s natural processes.

Practical Steps to Begin Your Self-Healing Journey
If you’re feeling called to reconnect with your body’s healing wisdom, here are some simple starting points:
1. Acknowledge Where You Are
Be honest about your symptoms, but try not to rush into fear or catastrophic thinking. Healing begins with acceptance: “This is where I am right now, and that’s okay.”
2. Listen to Your Body
Instead of ignoring pain or discomfort, tune in. Place your hand on the area, breathe, and simply ask: “What do you need?” You may be surprised at the subtle guidance that arises.
3. Speak Kindly to Yourself
Our words are powerful. Rather than criticising your body (“my stupid back”), treat it as a beloved friend. Say things like: “It’s okay, I’m here, I’ll do what I can to support you.”
4. Explore Energy Healing Methods
Techniques such as The Emotion Code and The Body Code allow you to tap into your subconscious mind, which is your incredible inner supercomputer and uncover the root causes of imbalance.
Start by reading The Emotion Code book, or learn how to unlock your own transformative power with The Immersion Path, an introductory course that offers everything you need to start your healing journey: click HERE for more details.
5. Combine With Medical Care
Self-healing is not about rejecting doctors or conventional treatment. It’s about complimenting it. If you’re unsure about a symptom, always get it checked medically. Then, alongside that, work with your body’s energy and emotions.
Healing as a Journey
Self-healing isn’t about quick fixes, it’s a journey, which often has ups and downs of learning to listen, trust and co-operate with your body. Along the way, mindset plays a crucial role. Fear-driven thoughts can undermine healing, while compassionate, hopeful thoughts create an environment where your body feels safe to repair.
And remember: you don’t have to do this alone. Support is available, whether through books like ‘The Emotion Code’, practitioners like myself or a community of people on a similar path.
Restoring Balance
Your body is far more intelligent than you might imagine. Beneath the symptoms and struggles lies a natural capacity for balance, resilience and restoration.
So if you’re feeling stuck in pain or dismissed by conventional routes, know this: healing is possible. Against the odds, through trust, balance and connection, your body can surprise you. Be gentle, be curious, make friends with your body.
Above all, hold onto the hope that things can change – because they can.
Your body is your ally. Team up with it and you may just be amazed at what’s possible.
